The year of Linux.
Published: July 15, 2026
For the last however many years, I, among others, have been saying "this year is the year of Linux"! And each year of Linux seemed to have come and gone.
And while Linux did gain tremendous traction during these years, it never really ended up being "Linux's" year.
However, as of late, it seems that this really could be the year of Linux. Whether you're talking about the amazing work that the Linux community is doing, or
Steam's Proton and SteamOS, or Microsoft's constant inability to not shoot themselves in the foot each time they have a chance to improve,
things appear to be on the up and up for the Linux ecosystem.
It gives me a great deal of pleasure to boot up my PC and feel as if I have genuine control over its hardware, operating system, and software. Especially in our
current age of software as a service, or bloated software. To have something that just works without such effort is exemplary. I feel this way regarding many of
the aspects surrounding Linux, like when I shut down or restart my computer, and it actually listens. I don't need to hit five separate prompts to initiate the shutdown and
close out of X program... the computer just listens and that is how it should be.
So maybe this truly will be the year of Linux.
